Island Crisis has this story which is all over the Internet by now.

“Our message for the federal government is simple: Use federal resources to combat the cartels that are breaking federal law,” said Governor Brewer.

Arizona’s counterclaim includes five points regarding the failures of the federal government. The state claims that the U.S. government failed to gain operational control of the border; enforce multiple federal immigration laws; protect it from economic harms and violence associated with illegal immigration. In addition, Arizona alleges that the government was negligent in not reimbursing Arizona for more than 0 million in combined costs for the incarceration of illegal aliens under the State Criminal Alien Assistance Program.

The last point of the counterclaim accuses the federal government of seeking to pre-empt Arizona from its constitutional right and duty to protect the health, safety and welfare of its own citizens. “By using its alleged ‘pre-emption’ rights to stop Arizona from performing its law enforcement obligations, the United States is violating Arizona’s 10th Amendment rights,” said Attorney General Horne.

Rand Paul (Ky.) and David Vitter (La.) are introducing a resolution this week that would amend the Constitution so that a person born in the United States could only become an American citizen if one or more of his or her parents is an legal citizen, legal immigrant, or member of the armed forces, according to a joint press release Thursday.

“Citizenship is a privilege, and only those who respect our immigration laws should be allowed to enjoy its benefits,” Paul said. “This legislation makes it necessary that everyone follow the rules, and goes through same process to become a U.S. citizen.”

The resolution is part of a larger bundle of immigration bills that Vitter introduced at the beginning of the 112th Congress.

From the article:

The Legislature passed an immigration reform law in 2008, but some critics say it’s not being enforced consistently and more needs to be done.

“I don’t understand some people thinking they somehow don’t have to follow the laws that my grandmother did,” said Kim Wanke, a second-generation immigrant from Yugoslavia. “So I don’t have a lot of sympathy for this immigrant problem. … The federal government is mandated to protect our space from foreign invasion, and they’re not doing that.”

Kendra Linkowski said it costs much more to educate and provide other services to illegal immigrants than local municipalities receive from the federal government.

“We are definitely under an invasion and our borders are wide open,” she said.

The DREAM Act in summary: This bill would provide certain illegal immigrant students who graduate from US high schools, who are of good moral character, arrived in the U.S. as minors, and have been in the country continuously for at least five years prior to the bill’s enactment, the opportunity to earn conditional permanent residency. The alien students would obtain temporary residency for a six year period. Within the six year period, a qualified student must have “acquired a degree from an institution of higher education in the United States or [have] completed at least 2 years, in good standing, in a program for a bachelor’s degree or higher degree in the United States,” or have “served in the uniformed services for at least 2 years and, if discharged, [have] received an honorable discharge.”

Oh yeah, and he’s also attaching the overturn of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell to the defense bill.

Michelle’s blog reminds us that it is not only the Dems who have advocated for the DREAM Act. She lists, (and has some video of) the following Republicans who have supported this bill:

McCain
Hatch
Lugar
Bennett
Brownback
Coleman
Collins
Craig
Hagel
Hutchison
Lott
Martinez
Snowe
Huckabee

This seems to be an event chock full of drama. Please check the links below for more info, and mark your calendars, as this will be streamed live on the Internet.

From Eric Odom:

Yesterday we had a stunning response to our announcement that the Patriot Caucus and Liberty First PAC is Co-Sponsoring the national “United Border Coalition Tea Party” on the border in Arizona.

So far, our fundraiser for the event has raised about $4,000, and we had hundreds of responses overnight from folks looking for details.

Event details are unfolding as follows:

Summary – SB1070 is a common sense law passed by the Arizona legislature that enables the state to enforce federal law on illegal immigration.

The border rally is being planned to support Arizona state as well as Arizona’s rights to pass and enforce SB1070.

1) Date – The date of the border rally is Sunday, August 15th.

2) Location – For security purposes, the location will not be immediately revealed. We can say that we have secured a large scale ranch on the Arizona/Mexico border.

The ranch is about a two and a half hour drive from Phoenix. We advise that you make your travel plans or Phoenix, and plan to make an early morning drive to the location on the 15th of August.

3) Facilities – Thanks to our fundraiser, we have secured the first $1,000 worth of portable toilets. We’re currently working to provide three times as many.

The ranch has RV hook-ups (limited) and some existing facilities. There will also be vendors providing food, beverages and plenty of cold water.

4) Security – The American Border Patrol has agreed to be present and work as our security for the event. We’ve also requested law enforcement to be present for the permitted rally.

5) Day Of – Speakers such as the famous “Sheriff Joe,” J.D. Hayworth and man others will be on site. There will be live entertainment, and organizers are working to provide hot air balloon and helicopter rides.

Main events to be held from 9:00 AM to Noon.

6) Live Online Stream – The events will be broadcast live on Ustream.

Please make plans to travel to Phoenix the weekend of August 15th. The location will be disclosed within the next few days. Watch the United Border Coalition website for final updates.

Stand for liberty and stand with Arizona!

SC Senator Tom Davis has a piece at Islandpacket.com titled “SC should follow Arizona’s lead on immigration”

here’s an excerpt:

What does all of this mean for us in South Carolina, and how should our state legislature respond?

Well, first it should fully fund the tough illegal immigration law that it passed in 2008. Private businesses must now comply with stringent employee background checks, and this year’s budget provides $2 million to pay for the state audits that will ensure compliance.

But our state legislature has not funded the part of the law that calls for a contract between the feds and the S.C. Law Enforcement Division to provide local governments with the training and facilities to arrest and process illegal aliens. Beaufort County Sheriff P. J. Tanner, has shown tremendous initiative in this regard, but he has limited resources. The state needs to properly fund this initiative.

Finally, South Carolina’s legislature should enact an Arizona-type law to further empower local enforcement of federal immigration laws. I am a primary sponsor of such a bill (S. 1446) that was filed last May. We should not be deterred in the least by the federal government’s recent challenge of Arizona’s law. The opinions of each and every federal court decision on this issue support the authority of Arizona to enact its law. The current lawsuit is federal bullying, pure and simple.

Let Senator Davis know how much you appreciate his stand on immigration = tom@senatortomdavis.com

Then … email this article to YOUR Senator and ask him to support Senator Davis and S. 1446.
