This is why I didn’t see Avatar

Caleb Howe at Redstate reports on the somewhat highly publicized “calling out” by James Cameron of the global warming skeptics and the ridiculous and pathetically cowardly way he backed out at the last minute.

Read Caleb’s account and you’ll delight in how Ann McElhinney (producer of the Anti-Gore documentary Not Evil Just Wrong) who is truly a hero among the Globally Sane kept agreeing to more and more tactics that Cameron put forth until he simply had no place to hide and canceled his big showdown.

About 5 years ago I decided that I would no longer support either financially or with attendance figures the work of people employed in the entertainment industry who I assessed to be tearing down America by either their work product or by abusing the opportunity their job gave them to have a microphone and spew their inane beliefs. “Beliefs” … cause they never had to back up their blathering with facts or documents or sources or actual experience. I wasn’t censoring them, I wasn’t denigrating their work product, it was just my personal boycott. Yes I’ve missed some good movies, and perhaps there are a few holes in my music collection of CDs that I’d enjoy listening to on long car trips. There are probably a few books that I’ll never have the joy of the “aha” moment in discovering the key to an intricate plot line, and I’ve been a bit lost in some pop culture water cooler discussions about certain TV series. And my lack of patronage has had zero impact on any of those artists. The only positive impact has been on my conscience.

I imagine the impact that an all out boycott by all the awakened patriots would have on the entertainment industry. I ponder how awesome it would be to see their products go unread/unwatched/unlistened to because we are so angry at how they’ve taken advantage of their public pulpit to besmirch American values. I think gleefully of a scenario where … like Newsweek being sold for a dollar … these artists come to understand just how little we value the shills they have become. But I know that will not be happening. It is hard to deny ourselves the escapism pleasure, especially in these turbulent times.

So I’ll just do the happy dance at James Cameron making a cowardly, hypocritical idiot of himself this weekend, and continue to pass up the opportunity to enrich and reward the egos of those I consider … yes I’m saying it … anti-American.
